The peanut plant is a fascinating and rewarding edible crop that defies expectations at every turn — technically a legume, not a nut, it produces its pods underground after its cheery yellow flowers self-pollinate and send shoots called "pegs" down into the soil. This low-growing, bushy annual is as productive as it is unique, yielding a generous harvest of protein-rich pods perfect for roasting, boiling, or pressing into oil. Beyond its culinary value, peanut plants are natural soil improvers, fixing atmospheric nitrogen back into the ground and leaving your garden beds enriched for the next season. A warm-season staple well-suited to Florida's long, sunny growing season, peanuts are a wonderfully educational and highly satisfying crop for gardeners of all ages.
Plant care
Sunlight: Full sun; at least 6 hours of direct light daily for best yield
Watering: Regular and even; about 1 inch per week; reduce as harvest approaches
Soil: Loose, sandy, well-draining; loose soil allows pegs to penetrate easily
Fertilizing: Low nitrogen needed; use a calcium-rich fertilizer at flowering
Spacing: Plant 6–8 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches wide
Hardiness: Annual; plant after last frost, soil temp above 65°F (18°C); matures in 120–150 days
